Under siege

Three hundred years after the siege of Barcelona, the military besieging of peoples continues to be a common reality today, in 2014. At the same time, new and sophisticated strategies of forms of siege have emerged in which control, both of information and of technology, plays a fundamental role. This project aims to open a reflection on the currency of the siege concept and also imagine, from the viewpoint of art, what might act as spaces of resistance in such contexts.

"Under Siege" presents two audiovisual works by the artists Mariam Ghani and Omer Fast, accompanied by a conversation between Mariam Ghani and the curator, Chus Martínez, about artistic practice in the context of siege. Secondly, three debates with journalists and researchers about differential and characteristic aspects of contemporary sieges, which will also include the projection of a documentary. These two different formats offer a complementary multidisciplinary take on the concept of siege, both based on specific cases of recent armed conflicts.
