William Kentridge and Julian Barnes

Debate

The artist William Kentridge and the writer Julian Barnes talk about their creative universes based on their shared interest in art, literature and music.

William Kentridge is one of the leading voices in contemporary art, a multifaceted artist who, through animation, drawing, film, music and theater, has integrated multiple creative disciplines. In turn, the writer Julian Barnes is one of the great renovators of the novel of our times, with a natural ability to merge genres and cross borders. Both artists also share a love of music, which has led them to create works inspired by the figure of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, such as Julian Barnes' novel The Noise of Time (published in Catalan by Angle Editorial and in Spanish by Anagrama, 2016) and the film Oh To Believe in Another World that William Kentridge has created for Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10. In this conversation, both authors talk about the role of music in their lives, and reflect on the creative process and the role of art and literature in addressing the past and individual and collective memory.

This event, conducted by CCCB director Judit Carrera, coincides with the premiere of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and follows the thread of the collaboration that Kentridge has maintained with the CCCB since the exhibition "That Which is not Drawn" (2020-2021).
