The Love Witch*
Anna Biller
2016 / USA / Blu-ray / 120 min / Spanish subtitles
With its meticulous retro-pop aesthetic, director Anna Biller (dubbed by the press as the female Tarantino) offers a film that is alternately delightful and scathing, screened at the Sitges Festival in 2016. Elaine (Samantha Robinson) is an attractive woman determined to find true love, using spells and magic which, to her chagrin, tend to have undesired outcomes. This beautifully made, venomous film addresses the figure of the witch from a feminist viewpoint and raises important issues about the toxicity of the myth of romantic love and narcissism in contemporary society.
