Xcèntric. 14th season 2014-2015
The Language Revolution. Érik Bullot
Xcèntric, the CCCB's cinema
Audiovisuals
The works shown in this session are half essay, half film. Cinema is not just a visual art, it is also a means of expression closely linked to language and translation. How do we communicate? How do we manage to pass from one language to another? Singing the names of cities (Fugue géographique), reciting absurd phrases in a dozen different languages, playing with the sound and the meaning of words (Tongue twisters), speaking backwards, listening to world radio, conversing in various different languages, answering riddles, using an encryption machine, talking in sign language, writing calligraphy, making up imaginary languages (Glossolalia), painting graffiti, singing the alphabet, suddenly switching alphabet, observing the political memory of a society (La Révolution de l’alphabet)… These are some of the suggestions of these films, which reflect on the role of language and languages, and the vertigo of translation.
