Imagining the Future
Debate
Free
The philosopher and journalist Carolin Emcke and the writer and photographer Teju Cole speak with the journalist Marta Arias about the present situation and reflect on the political, social, and psychological implications of the pandemic.
In his work as a writer and photographer, Teju Cole starts out from literature and the visual arts to ponder the complexity of contemporary society and to explore the reality of his surroundings by means of landscapes in the cities that have marked him. The philosopher Carolin Emcke, who was a war correspondent for fourteen years combines in her work reflections on human behaviour and some of today’s big questions like fanaticism, racism, and a growing hostility towards democracy. In this session, Emcke and Cole will share their views on the crisis and discuss with Marta Arias the importance of culture for imagining new futures in the complicated times in which we are now living.
