Seeing the Invisible
Lecture by Gary Lachman
Debate
Gary Lachman, writer, musician, and expert on the history of consciousness and esoteric thought, emphasises the importance of occultism in the shaping of modern culture.
In official discourse, the occult, the magic, esotericism, and mysticism have been relegated to the status of relics of a bygone world. This inventory of beliefs and practices, however, has played a key role in the creation of iconic expressions of modern culture, from decadent fin-de-siècle occultism through to new dimensions of abstract art, and from 1950s and 1960s counterculture to the New Age, which is still alive and well today. For Lachman, the union of art and the occult goes beyond creative symbiosis to open up windows into worlds that are different from our own.
