MINIPUT 2018

24th Quality TV Festival

Audiovisuals

Free

MINIPUT is the only quality television exhibition in Spain. It is not a market. It is not a festival. It is made up of sessions of screenings and debates with the people responsible for the year’s most innovative, provocative and educational programmes at the service of the public and has been held in Barcelona every December since 1994. The programmes are selected for the reflection they have prompted, for their innovative or experimental approach, because they propose a new TV format or use new technologies, or because they have generated controversy in their country of origin.

GROTESCO

Sweden, 30 min., political comedy, SVT

With the attendance of Michael Lindgren (director)

Presented by: Àngel Leiro

In 2015, Europe experienced a huge surge of refugees due to the Syrian war and other conflicts. These refugees travelled from Turkey to Greece by boat and then walked along the roads or took trains to the wealthier or more open to entry countries on the continent. Their vast numbers created great tension in European society, firing up national populist politics; but also mobilising civil action through solidarity movements offering help and support. The Swedish comedy group Grotesco has created a short musical about this period, based on the Swedes’ political perspective and public opinion. Grotesco was selected as the best political comedy programme produced in Sweden in 2017. The programme broaches the issue of the mass fleeing from Syria in 2015 and how Sweden and other European countries handled it. Can comedy, and a musical, really address such a serious topic? This is the first episode of an eight-part series dealing with various issues related to Swedish society.

OLD PEOPLE’S HOME FOR 4 YEAR OLDS

England, 60 min., infotainment, Channel 4

With the attendance of Murray Boland, Creative Director of CPL Productions

Presented by: Laia Servera (director of Info K, TV3)

This format tackles one of the most pressing issues in society. Social isolation is one of the greatest problems for the elderly. Loneliness, combined with boredom and inactivity, all have a very severe impact on health, wellbeing and life expectancy. If children of age 4 and elderly people of 84 worked and played together, would it help to improve the latter’s health and happiness? Ten preschool children have eleven pensioners in their classroom for six weeks in an effort to dramatically improve retired people’s health and wellbeing. The volunteers share daily activities designed by a group of experts to measure and analyse the elderly’s physical and mental progress.  The end results of the experiment are quite extraordinary, with significant differences in their physical, social and emotional wellbeing.

TOKYO BLACK HOLE

Japan, 50 min., documentary, NHK

Presented by: Endika Rey (Tecnocampus Mataró)

Tokyo is known as one of the most orderly cities in the world, but 72 years ago and just after the end of the Second World War, it was a lawless place from which people moved out of necessity. In order to see what happened in Tokyo in the twelve months following the war’s end, the NHK analysed more than 100,000 pages of the CIA’s declassified documents and researched footage (CF1) of the general public for many hours, plus other taken by the North American occupying forces. In this documentary a young man from the 21st century, Takeshi, travels back in time to Tokyo in 1945. The skilful video composition technique places the actor right in old movie footage, allowing the audience an immersive experience. It highlights the black market which had emerged in the ruined city, with people involved in illegal businesses in order to survive, many women only able to feed their families by working as prostitutes, men working with Yakuza gangs… while hundreds of people are dying of hunger every month. In contrast, the families of the occupying forces are living in luxury. The film shows how the desperate people in this ruined city start to build up the foundations of what the Japanese capital is today.

NATIONAL BIRD

United States, 92 min., PBS, produced by Errol Morris and Wim Wenders

Presented by: Joan Úbeda (Mediapro)

Thanks to Wikileaks (2006) and after the Snowden (2013) and Manning (2010) incidents, we’re all used to the term whistleblowers; these are people who work in private sectors, but particularly in public sectors, who alert everyone about fraudulent activities. In this documentary, produced by the influential Errol Morris and Wim Wenders, three people blow the whistle on the secret drone warfare campaign in North America. Suffering from the guilt of participating in the assassination of faceless people in foreign countries, two brave women and a retired analyst who gets in touch with an analyst who worked in the NSA choose to take their chances and speak out.

GONE MOM

South Korea, 42 min., reality, EBS

Presented by: Mercè Oliva (UPF)

At times being a mother is an impossible role: never-ending tasks, slobby husbands, having to care for their kids throughout various phases, stress at work and lots more. Mothers are a combination of precious daughters, loyal girlfriends, trusted partners and dreamers, but often the family forget this. Gone mom offers these mothers freedom. This is a docureality series showing how a mother is enjoying herself while the members of her family struggle to survive in her absence. The programme offers anonymous mothers $1000 to get away from home and spend the money as they choose. In this episode, Jung Eun Joo, a mother of four, is engulfed by domestic chores while her husband, Kang Gun Il, acts more like a child than a father. The audience sees the whole process via a recording device and hidden cameras. On the TV set, the family and hosts of the programme comment on everything that’s going to happen over these surrealistic days.

HUMAN SMUGGLERS

Denmark, 59 min., documentary, DR

With the attendance of Poul-Erik Heilbuth

Presented by: Matilde Delgado and Elisabet Cabeza (UAB)

For the first time, human traffickers reveal the secrets of their trade. This documentary offers a real and unique inside view of an industry that has generated millions aside from the trafficking of immigrants into Europe. When European politicians promise to put an end to this illegal and uncontrollable wave of immigrants, what they are confronted with are these mafias. The documentary shows how one of the largest travel agencies operates in worldwide human smuggling. They are seen offering deals on bespoke trips for individuals and groups based on their financial potential, producing fake documents, working together, competing, setting up networks and getting involved in other industries. However, in this case it is conducted under the pressure of being an illegal business.

PRIMARY HELL

Netherlands, 25 min., comedy series, Avrotros

Presented by: Francesc Escribano (Minoria Absoluta)

This comedy series highlights the dynamics between parents and teachers and their ongoing battle in primary schools. It’s a well-known and familiar scenario, but also quite absurd. Primary school is an extraordinary mini-society with its own rules which are sometimes very weird. Hannah is recently divorced, and her daughter Floor starts at a new school where they are both dragged into the frenzy of school politics. There are no integration courses, so it’s all based on trial and error, where Hannah attempts to get to grips with unwritten rules in this new place which is so crucial for her new life.

GIVE US A BREAK!

Japan, 49 min., entertainment show, NHK

Presented by: Montse Armengou (director of Sense Ficció, TV3)

This is another spin off ofThe Barrier Free Variety Show (which was available on MINIPUT) that takes it even further. It’s barrier-free type of entertainment in which 100 disabled people take part in a frank and lively discussion with well-known personalities on Japanese TV. The first series was launched in December of 2016. This second one asks people how they think they should act in certain situations involving the disabled. The discussion is presented in questionnaire format that is frequently funny, focusing on how successfully the guests respond. The production team itself is made up of people with and without disabilities, making the programme very realistic and honest.
