Not Giving In: Critical Journalism in Mexico

Debate

How is it possible to engage in critical journalism given the complicated social, economic, political and cultural situation in the most dangerous country in the world for journalists?

Marcela Turati, a multi-award winning journalist and human rights defender, talks to journalist Pere Ortín about the difficult situation of journalism in Mexico and some of its most complex and significant current challenges. A conversation about journalism in a country where typing is more necessary than ever because it means not giving in to violence – but where it can also lead, unfortunately and all too often, to a death sentence. “Typing is not giving in,” was a phrase often repeated by Javier Valdez, a Mexican journalist and director of the newspaper Río 12 in Culiacán (Sinaloa), who was murdered in 2017 in front of the newspaper’s offices by assassins working for the drug trafficker “El Chapo” Guzmán.
