Internet Universe #1. Introduction

Internet Universe aims is to offer a global view of the phenomenon, an understanding of the new system that is emerging in order to offer tools to the teachers of children who were born digital natives. The first session will serve to present the conceptual framework of the Internet Universe project and give a global view of what the Internet network is.

The History of the Internet is a collective creation that is still under construction, with its origins in the hands of the military. Today it has come to form part of the everyday life of many people.

What is the real scope of the digital revolution and how does it affect all spheres of human knowledge? What changes are implied by the Knowledge and Information Society? What does the boom in ICTs represent? And, what role must they play in education and in the learning process?

In this workshop we will build a simulated telecommunications network that will allow us to discover the real structure of the Internet. Using this methodology we can understand what is required in order to be connected to the Network and what implications are involved on a social, economic and political level.

With the aim of understanding the design typology of the Internet, two different models will be proposed: the commercial network managed by telecommunications corporations and the model designed by guifi.net – the open, free and neutral network, built by ordinary citizens and promoting digital inclusion in a sustainable way.
