The second quantum revolution
Debate
The experts Ignacio Cirac and Anna Fontcuberta discuss the new impacts of quantum physics on communications and computing.
In the early years of the twentieth century, quantum physics changed perceptions of the world and led to the invention of devices, including computers, mobile telephones, lasers, and optical fibres, which have thoroughly transformed society. However, scientists have continued to research and have found new applications in such areas as computer and communications technologies. The impact of this theory is so radical that, a hundred years after its early development, the United Nations has proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. What can be achieved with quantum computers? Will they make it possible to surpass the current supercomputers? Will it be possible to develop completely secure cryptography?
We invite Ignacio Cirac, pioneer in quantum computing, and expert in materials with quantum applications, Anna Fontcuberta, to analyse the present stage of research in this field and discuss why new quantum technologies are creating so much expectation, not only in the domain of science but also in economic and geopolitical spheres. The journalist and science writer, Michele Catanzaro, will moderate the discussion.
Moderators: Michele Catanzaro
Participants: Ignacio Cirac, Anna Fontcuberta
