Frederick Neuhouser
Economic Inequality: a Contemporary Pathology
Debate
Frederick Neuhouser, professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, will speak about the pathologies of contemporary society in this lecture, which is co-organised with the Barcelona Network for Critical Thought and Social Research (BCNCT) and the University of Barcelona.
In recent decades, economic inequality has increased at an alarming rate in most parts of the world. In this session, the philosopher Frederick Neuhouser offers a critical analysis of rising inequality and explains why, exactly, it is a matter that should concern us. Through the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, this lecture examines two aspects of present-day critiques that are frequently overlooked. Neuhouser analyses inequality as a threat to the freedom of the disadvantaged, while also questioning the modern conception of private property, according to which owners have an absolute right to do whatever they wish with the things they possess. In this lecture Neuhouser, author of Diagnosing Social Pathology: Rousseau, Hegel, Marx and Durkheim (Cambridge University Press, 2022), offers a new perspective on the main challenges facing societies today.
On March 7 will take place the seminari Social Pathologies: A Concept for Criticism, with Frederick Neuhouser.
