Conversation with Eudald Espluga

Debate

Sociologist Eva Illouz and essayist Eudald Espluga talk about intimacy, emotions, and capitalism in a present in turmoil.

Eva Illouz is one of the most internationally recognized sociologists. Throughout her career, she has analyzed the impact of capitalism on emotions, love, intimacy and sexuality. She is the author of relevant books such as Why Love Hurts: A Sociological Explanation (published in Spanish by Katz, 2012); Emotions as Commodities: Capitalism, Consumption and Authenticity (published in Spanish by Katz, 2019), or Unloving (published in Spanish by Katz, 2020), in which she explores the paradigm shift in contemporary sentimental relationships, marked by uncertainty. Illouz will discuss this topic with Eudald Espluga, author of the influential essay, No siguis tu mateix. Apunts sobre una generació fatigada (Destino, 2022), in which he uses Eva Illouz's key ideas such as «emotional capitalism» to question the role of affection in the neoliberal management of contemporary society.
