Data Journalism. Work session (IV)
Working with Data in the New York Times and Scraping Workshop
Debate
The Data Journalism work sessions aim to be practical sessions with two objectives: to learn and make inroads into working with data through workshops, and to raise awareness regarding local projects. We will be ending the year with two projects of international renown within the world of data journalism: the New York Times and the Open Knowledge Foundation.
5 p.m. - 6.30 p.m. // Workshop on 'Getting the Best Out of the Web with Scraping' with Michael Bauer (Open Knowledge Foundation).
Scraping refers to the extraction of information or data from a website or a PDF to work with them on a spreadsheet or so that they can be used on different visualisation platforms. We will be working on basic concepts of web scraping based on a small number of simple tools.
7 p.m. - 8 p.m. // Explaining Stories with Data. The Case of the NEW YORK TIMES with Aron Pilhofer (New York Times).
Aron Pilhofer has directed, since 2007 an experimental newsroom team at the New York Times, made up of journalists and IT specialists who work to explain stories based on the use of software, data and journalistic skills. This team is responsible for building tools to cover major stories such as the London Olympic Games, the US presidential elections of 2012 and, more recently, Hurricane Sandy.
Participants: Karma Peiró, Aron Pilhofer, Michael Bauer
