Data Journalism. Work session (II)

The Data Journalism work sessions aim to be practical meetings with two objectives: learning about and making deeper inroads into work with data through workshops, plus the raising of awareness regarding local projects.

This session will show us how to tell stories with the data generated by social movements. We will become acquainted with the practical case of Datanalysis-15M and we will learn how to use the tool CartoDB, which allows data to be visualised on maps.

 

5.00 p.m. – 5.45 p.m. //Presentation Datanalysis15M, a project that studies how the 15-M movement altered the agenda of the traditional media. Explanation of the research hypothesis, methodologies and main results. Transmedia mobilisation through practical cases explored recently by Datanalysis15M.

6.15 p.m. – 8.00 p.m. // Workshop on Working with Geospatial Data. The workshop will begin with an introduction to the different geographical formats and the most common ways of obtaining geospatial data. Then, there will be an introduction to the Global Database of Events, Language and Tone (GDELT), which includes the records of worldwide protests since 1979. Next, we will use CartoDB to visualise and generate maps based on this database.
