Barcelona, Venice, Amsterdam: Three Stories of City and Sea
Debate
Carola Hein, Francesco Musco and Miriam García will discuss the future of coastal cities from a composite perspective on three European cities that are paradigmatic in their historical relationships with the sea.
Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Venice are three European cities whose coastal condition has shaped the lives of their citizens and forged age-old close links between land and sea. This relationship, which has kept changing through to the present day, has profoundly influenced all areas of social life, from trade and the economy, to language, art, and architecture. All three cities must now deal with the often serious effects of climate change. What can we learn from their history that might help to address the complexity of the present?
Carola Hein, Francesco Musco and Miriam García, three specialists in the urban history of Amsterdam, Venice, and Barcelona respectively, will share their views in this analysis of the three coastal cities, and their past and future relationships with the sea.
This is the closing event of “Cities and Sea”, a series of debates of the Cultural Regatta, a programme of activities promoted by the Barcelona City Council on the occasion of the holding of the America’s Cup in the city.
