Lecture by Bernardo Atxaga

Debate

Why are all languages important? What happens when a language falls into disuse or disappears? In the closing session of the international Linguapax symposium the writer Bernardo Atxaga will share his thoughts on the need to safeguard and strengthen linguistic diversity in the world.

When talking about the relationship between the different languages of the world, the first thing to bear in mind is what Abdelfattah Kilito expressed in metaphorical terms: words are the opposite of soap. The more you use them, the bigger and stronger they get. Repetition is their driving force. What happens, then, with languages which, because of a small number of speakers or absence of political or economic power to protect them, cannot be widely used?

The writer Bernardo Atxaga will offer his thoughts at the closing session of the international seminar “Cities, Arts and Experiences of the Word” (http://www.linguapax.org/archives/8017-linguapax2018-cities-arts-and-experiences-of-the-word) the theme of which is linguistic diversity as the driving force of creativity and tool for dialogue and peace.

Presenters: Isabel Sucunza

Participants: Bernardo Atxaga
