Apprenticeship in Love. Critical Pedagogy against Gender Violence

Lecture by Shirley R. Steinberg

Who do we fall in love with and why? How do the mechanisms of attraction and desire work? What relationship do they have with abuse and illness? Shirley R. Steinberg, Research Professor of Youth Studies at the University of Calgary, will describe how processes of learning and socialisation guide our affective relationships, from the choice of type of relation through to desires and amorous expectations. Taking the well-known studies of Professor Jesús Gómez as her starting point, Steinberg will explain how to teach adolescents that their love relationships can be both egalitarian and passionate, and how this apprenticeship in love is essential in preventing gender violence.

Presented by: Marta Soler, PhD from Harvard University and director of CREA (Centre for Research on Theories and Practices for Overcoming Inequalities - University of Barcelona).
