Antonio J. Rodríguez in conversation with Eloy Fernández Porta

100% Feminine, 100% Masculine. Desire in the Era of Viral Feminism

Debate

Online

The writer Antonio J. Rodríguez, author of La nueva masculinidad de siempre (The New Masculinity as Always, Anagrama, 2020), will talk with Eloy Fernández Porta about gender, desire, and masculinity in feminism’s fourth wave.

Global phenomena like #MeToo have revived awareness of the struggle against the heteropatriarchy which began some decades ago. The debate on the (lack of) validity of gender categories is expanding and it seems that an egalitarian, self-critical masculinity which is willing to cede spaces of privilege is slowly beginning to appear. Nevertheless, this process is also giving rise to a host of paradoxes, ambiguities, and even more questions. Has the “new masculinity” emerged from the discussion about gender categories, or is this a mere substitution of traditional “male” attributes by others of a different kind? Does the abolition of the heteropatriarchy necessarily mean the end of heterosexuality? Are such new sensibilities seeping into all social strata or are they restricted to an elite?

The journalist and writer Antonio J. Rodríguez will share his thoughts on masculinity, gender, and desire, in a new framework that challenges us to change our views and come together to redesign our affective maps.

This session is part of the course “Masculí, antipatriarcal” (Masculine, Antipatriarchal) headed by Eloy Fernández Porta and offered by the Barcelona Institute of Humanities (IHB).
