Questions that Matter (to us)

Debate

On the occasion of the publication of Sócrates al descubierto (Kairós, 2025, Open Socrates, Norton, 2025), the American philosopher Agnes Callard and professor Jordi Graupera advocate for shared philosophical inquiry in addressing an inevitable question: How should we live?

Can Socrates’ ideas, forged over two thousand years ago, serve as a compass to help us navigate the uncertainties of modernity? Philosopher Agnes Callard answers with an enthusiastic “yes” and invites us to reclaim the radical energy of a thinker who, before offering answers or solutions, asserts the importance of asking each other good questions. In the book Open Socrates, Callard highlights the non-conformism of a philosopher who never ceased questioning how we live and what we believe, without falling into dogmatisms, inviting us to constantly reassess our values through public conversation. Following the Socratic example, Agnes Callard and Jordi Graupera explore the big questions that impact us, whether we like it or not: How are we affected by love and emotions? How should we approach death? What form should our political engagement take? Rather than offering conclusive answers, in this session the two philosophers put into practice what is perhaps the Greek philosopher’s core teaching: that our questions—and our answers—are best formulated in the company of others, in an ongoing dialogue in which we (re)discover one another.
