The writer and playwright Gonçalo Tavares speaks with the writer, translator, and publisher Tina Vallès about how culture helps us to envision the world after the pandemic.
With the suspension of the social and economic life that gave rise to the virus, the sphere of culture has been especially hard hit. Despite uncertainty over the future, creativity has not come to a stop but has been filling screens with content from all the artistic disciplines. “Salvation depends on a small fissure”, Tavares suggests in an entry of his Diari de la peste (Plague Diary), which he began to write at the end of March as a way of telling the story of the experience of confinement. Is culture a fissure through which it might be possible to construct a future that is not dominated by fear? How can culture help the current situation, and how can we protect it from the serious crisis that is still to come?
This conversation has been prerecorded in order to guarantee its technical quality and to comply with the current restrictions of movement. It will be broadcast on the CCCB website.
Participants: Tina Vallès, Gonçalo M. Tavares
