The Baroque (D)ef(f)ect”. Politics of the Hispanic Image
Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito (Quito, Ecuador)
The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito presents the exhibition “The Baroque (D)ef(f)ect”. Politics of the Hispanic Image”, which will run from 22 November to 4 March 2011.
The exhibition is the result of an analysis of the Hispanic phenomenon as a shared framework for Spain and Latin America. Of all the images used in Spanish-speaking countries to construct and legitimate their identity and memory, the baroque has been the most lasting, widespread and influential, often at the cost of other equally important threads. “The Baroque (D)ef(f)ect” is devised as a dissection of this narrative and of the cultural policies that continue to write it today.
In the framework of this travelling exhibition, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito will present proposals on the subject by Ecuadorian artists that extend and enrich the show presented in Barcelona in 2010. The exhibition will also provide the framework for a seminar to explore the constitution of the myth of the baroque image as the foremost reference in the visual representation of the identitary narrative of the Hispanic phenomenon.
