“Nothing factual that I write or say will be as truthful as my fiction”. This phrase by Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer resonated deeply in Pankaj Mishra's mind. Linking truth and fantasy might seem paradoxical; but Mishra's literary trajectory, marked by a dialectic between fiction and non-fiction narrative, reveals that such is not the case. In today's society of disinformation and the age of post-truth, facts seem to have increasingly less importance. Aware of this state of affairs, Mishra returned to fiction, knowing that literature imaginatively reveals the deepest and truest aspects of the human being and, ultimately, is the one that knows us best. Today Mishra revalues the novel as a creative space because, indeed, fiction can be more truthful than facts.
«Fiction will continue to speak, more valuably than ever, its truths in the post-truth age.»
