With a degree in Education (Instituto Superior Pedagógico Enrique José Varona), he was Head of Publications at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños (International School of Film and Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños) from 1994 to 1997 and again from 2002 to 2007, and is director of the electronic review Miradas. He has lectured on Cuban literature in Colombia and Puerto Rico, as well as in the universities of Princeton, Brown, CUNY, Stony Brook, Berkeley, Harvard, Yale, Michigan, FIU, Ohio and Austin, among other universities in the United States. He has been awarded several prizes for his work as an essayist and poet and is author of Historias del cuerpo (Body Stories - La Habana, 2001), La maldición: una historia del placer como conquista (The Curse. A History of Pleasure as Conquest - La Habana, 1998) and Rupturas y homenajes (Ruptures and Homages - La Habana, 1999), inter alia.
