Ulises Cortés
Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and director of the High Performance Artificial Intelligence Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC).
Ulises Cortés graduated in Engineering from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education in 1982 and has a PhD from the UPC (1984). In 1988 he founded the Knowledge, Engineering, and Machine Learning Group at the UPC and, ever since, has been applying artificial intelligence to environmental challenges like wastewater management. He is cofounder of SISLTECH (a company offering advanced control solutions for sewage treatment plants) and was a member of its board of directors from 2011 to 2016. Since 2006, he has been professor of Artificial Intelligence at the UPC and, since 2017, has headed the High Performance Artificial Intelligence Group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). His research is concerned with concept formation in knowledge-based systems, machine learning, and autonomous intelligent agents.
Throughout his long academic career, he has published more than 70 scientific articles in international journals and has directed numerous doctoral theses. He is a founding member of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA) and of the Ethics Committee at the UPC. He is also a member of the Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Digital Rights of the city of Barcelona, of the Catalan Observatory for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (OIEAC), of the executive board of the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence (AEPIA), of the board of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAi), and of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). In 2023, the University of Girona awarded him an honorary doctorate.
