Pilar Marco

World expert in nanobiomedicine

Pilar Marco is a leading biomedical researcher in Spain and is also internationally recognised in the field of nanobiotechnology applied to medical diagnostics. Notable among her contributions is the development of electrochemical and optical devices for rapid and cost-effective analysis. She is research professor at the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC) where she heads the multidisciplinary group Nanobiotechnology for Diagnostics (Nb4D). Since June 2024, she is the Scientific Director of the Bioengineering, Biomaterials, and Nanomedicine Area (CIBER-BBN) in the Biomedical Research Networking Centre (CIBER). She has published more than 225 scientific articles, supervised 28 PhD theses, and has been lead researcher in numerous European and Spanish projects. Moreover, she has registered 15 patents and signed 36 contracts with companies. During the COVID-19 crisis, she played a key role in the development of devices for fast, reliable, and inexpensive detection of coronavirus disease. She was also active in the CSIC Global Health Platform which brought together more than 150 research teams to address various aspects of the pandemic. Furthermore, Pilar Marco is a well-known advocate for gender equality in science.
