Freelance writer based in Sydney, Australia. He was formerly a teacher of history at Sydney University from 1981 to 1995. He writes reviews and essays for academic and other journals. As an Associate of Australian Heritage Projects he was co curator of the centenary exhibition Belonging in 2000-01. His last book was Australians at War (2001). In that year he edited a book on the National Library of Australia's collections called Remarkable Occurrences. He is currently writing a book about early colonial strife in New South Wales. He also works for the National Centre for History Education where he is writer/editor of the online history journal Ozhistorybytes.
