Mona Eltahawy

Journalist and writer

Mona Eltahawy (Port Said, Egypt, 1967) began her journalistic career working as a reporter in the Middle East until some years later she moved to the United States and worked as a contributor to American media. She was a correspondent in Egypt during the Arab Spring and with her work on this issue reaping considerable praise and awards. She currently writes opinion columns in The New York Times, among other media.   

Eltahawy has recently seen publication of the Spanish translation of her book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2015), a categorical essay in impeccable journalistic style which she wrote based on her experience as an eye-witness to the problems of women in the Middle East. In 2005, the American Society for Muslim Advancement recognised her work as an activist and named her a "Muslim Leader of Tomorrow". She is a member of the Communications Advisory Group for Musawah, the global movement for justice and equality in the Muslim family.
