Maria V. Sánchez-Vives has a PhD in neurosciences and, since 2008, has been an ICREA research professor at IDIBAPS (August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute) where she heads the Neuroscience Systems group. She is also co-director of the Event Lab (Experimental Virtual Environments in Neuroscience and Technology) at the University of Barcelona-IDIBAPS. She was a postdoctoral student at Rockefeller University (New York) and a research fellow at Yale University. She currently leads the "Networks Underlying Cognition and Consciousness" group at the Human Brain Project, where she is a member of the Infrastructure and Science Council. Her main interests in neuroscience are the generation of brain rhythmic activity, brain states, neurotechnology, and neuromodulation from an experimental and computational approach. She also works on the mental representation of the body by way of brain-computer interfaces, using virtual reality systems in order to understand these processes.
