Marta Azparren

Visual artist

Marta Azparren is a visual artist moving between experimental film, live arts and drawing. She has a degree in Fine Arts (Complutense University of Madrid) and a master’s degree in Film and Contemporary Audiovisual Studies (Pompeu Fabra University). Resident intern at the Spanish Academy in Rome 2022 (Experimental film). Her work proposes meta-reflection on artistic activity with particular attention to the connections between creator, spectator, work and the internal machinery of mediation, production and exhibition. Her gaze is also directed towards the non-visual in the visual, that which tends to disappear. Her audiovisual proposals tend towards expanded cinema, live editing, spoken cinema and video installation. Her pieces have shown at the Cineteca Matadero, Museo CA2M, Festival Domingo (La Casa Encendida), Xcèntric CCCB, La Capella, Círculo de Bellas Artes, the Spanish Academy in Rome, Arts Santa Mònica, Festival de Otoño, Triennale di Milano, Werkleitz-Centre for Media Art, Centro Cultural Español en México, Art Beijing, and LOOP, Festival de Cine de Madrid, New Media Film (LA); DFA’s Dance on Camera (NY), Videoformes Kassel Dokfest, Strangloscope, CineToro, Les Instants Vidéo and Zebra Poetry Film, among others. She published the essay “Cine ciego. Detener el flujo de las imágenes” on monochrome film and images without image in Libros de la Resistencia, 2nd ed., May 2023. Since October 2023 she has been research artist in residence at the Multisensory Research Group of Pompeu Fabra University, with the project “Epoché. The zero degree of image”.
