Marjana Gaponenko

This young writer of Ukrainian origin is one of the most talented voices of the new generation of writers in German.

Marjana Gaponenko was born in 1981 in Odessa (Ukraine), where she studied German Philology. After living in Krakow (Poland) and Dublin (Ireland), she now divides her time between Maguncia and Vienna. Gaponenko has written in German since she was 16. In 2000 she debuted with the book of poems Wie tränenlose Ritter (Like knights without tears). In 2009 she received the Frau Ava literary award. Her first novel Annuschka Blume was published in 2010 by Residenz Verlag. In 2012, the prestigious Suhrkamp Verlag published her second novel Wer ist Martha? (Who is Martha?), winner of Austria’s Alpha award and the Adelbert von Chamisso Prize of the Robert Bosch Foundation which honours foreign authors who write in German.
