Margery Arent Safir
Professor of Comparative Literature at the American University of Paris, where she gives interdisciplinary classes on science and literature, as well as on Spanish and Latin American literature. Since 1992 she has been a member of the Sorbonne's Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Latin American Cultural Studies (CRICCAL, University of Paris III).
Margery Arent Safir gained her B.A. magna cum laude in Art at Columbia University and her PhD at Yale University. She is the author, joint author, translator and general editor of diverse books, numerous articles, interviews and essays on contemporary Latin American authors and on the subject of the integration of knowledge and the imagination; she has also organised different international conferences.
Her most important publications are: Earth Tones: The Poetry of Pablo Neruda (1981), together with Manuel Durán, A Woman of Letters (1984), Mélancolies du savoir: essais sur l'oeuvre de Michel Rio (1995), Melancholies of Knowledge: Literature in the Age of Science (1999), and Connecting Creations/ Science-Technology-Literature-Arts (2000). She is well known for her interdisciplinary work as a specialist in the field of science and literature, and for the innovative nature, both in terms of methodology and focus, of her studies on Europe and the two Americas of the 19th and 20th centuries.
