Maite Melero

Maite Melero has a doctorate in Computational Linguistics and forms part of the Language Technologies Unit of the Barcelona National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), where she heads the Machine Translation group. She has extensive experience in this sector, both in academic research (Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Centre d’Innovació Barcelona Media) and in the industry (Microsoft Research). She leads the BSC’s participation in several national and European projects. She has advised the Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence on the deployment of the Language Technologies Promotion Plan. She co-authored the report on Language Equality in the Digital Age for the European Parliament and is the author of the chapter “Catalan and the Digital Challenge” in the report An Egalitarian Sociolinguistic Framework for the Catalan Language for Pacte Nacional per la Llengua. She has represented Spain at European Language Resource Coordination-ELRC and often participates as a speaker on the impact of technology in the preservation of language diversity.
