Maciej Lewenstein

An ICREA research professor at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (IFCO), he heads a leading research group in quantum optics theory, a field investigating the application of quantum physics to phenomena, including light, and their interactions with matter. With a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Duisberg-Essen (1983), he began to work at IFCO, Catalonia,  in 2005. His research ranges over widely diverse areas and, in fact, he regularly contributes to other branches of knowledge, for example mathematics and other domains even further removed from physics like the cognitive sciences. His research work in theoretical physics, which has received several prizes and is internationally recognised, has focused on application of methods of contemporary theoretical physics in areas like quantum physics and quantum optics. Outside academia, Lewenstein is a devotee of avant-garde music as well as being a distinguished writer and jazz critic.
