Josep Lluís Berral
Josep Lluís Berral is a computer engineer (2007), with an MSc in Computer Architecture (2008) and PhD in Computer Science (2013) from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). His research focuses on data analysis in high performance systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning in Cloud environments, in the Department of Computer Architecture (DAC-UPC) and at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). He is the leader of the Computing Resources Orchestration and Management for AI group (UPC + BSC). He is currently collaborating on European projects and private projects with IBM and Intel, and has previously collaborated with Databricks, Microsoft and Cisco. He has conducted research in two groups at the UPC, High Performance Computing and Relational Algorithms, Complexity and Learning. He also formed part of the DarkLab group at Rutgers University (Piscataway, NJ) in 2012, and IBM’s Thomas J. Watson labs (Yorktown, NY) in 2019. He was awarded a Juan de la Cierva research grant from the Spanish Ministry of Economy in 2016 and the I3 distinction from the Ministry of Universities in 2022.
