José Luís Cabezas
A true superhero of the oral tradition, known by all the followers of the Poetry Slam circuit.
Clark Kent is Superman, Peter Parker is Spiderman and José Luis Cabezas is none other than Payaso Manchego [the Clown from La Mancha], a veritable superhero of the spoken word, familiar to everyone on the poetry slam scene. This poet, performer and speaker has spent years on the poetry scene, and has been around since the beginning of the poetry slam movement and the national spoken word. For the last 12 years he has been the MC of Poetry Slam Barcelona.
The founder of Red927, who are the organisers of the Festival Santa Coloma Spoken Word 2010–2016 and of Poetry Slam Barcelona, Payaso Manchego responds to the question “Why poetry?” in this way: “Because it pricks me, it strikes me. Because a verse can open up a whole world, and a single image―beam of light―can illuminate paths that enable me to travel through it, or have recollections without even realising it. Taking me along the sole path, the way of the present, of life, of death, of everything and nothing. Just for that: for that prick, that inspirational spirit.”
