José Ignacio Torreblanca

Lecturer at UNED (Open University of Distance Education), chief researcher and director of the Madrid Office of the European Council on Foreign Relations.

José Ignacio Torreblanca is a tenured lecturer in the Department of Politics and Administration at the Madrid-based Open University of Distance Education and a Fellow at the Juan March Institute of Study and Research in Madrid. From 2004 to 2007 he was senior analyst for EU Affairs at the Elcano Royal Institute for International Affairs (Madrid).

He is presently chief researcher and director of the Madrid Office of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). He has written several books and articles on EU decision-making processes, EU enlargement policy, and Spain’s European policy. Notable among his publications are The Reuniting of Europe: Promises, Negotiations and Compromises; “La europeización de la política exterior española” (The Europeanisation of Spanish Foreign Policy) in Carlos Closa, La Europeización del Sistema Político Español (The Europeanisation of the Spanish Political System); and “Consecuencias de la ampliación al Este para España: aspectos políticos e institucionales” (Consequences of Enlargement to the East for Spain: Political and Institutional Aspects – in Hay, FRIDE-Siddharta, 2003).
