Jorge Sampaio
United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations.
(Lisbon, 1939). United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations since 2007 and former president of the Republic of Portugal (1996-2006), he has a degree in Law from the University of Lisbon and worked as a defence lawyer for political prisoners during the dictatorship. He joined the Portuguese Socialist Party in 1978, after which he occupied different political posts. He was Mayor of Lisbon from 1989 to 1995.
