Joan J. Guinovart

Joan J. Guinovart (Tarragona, 1947) received a degree in Chemistry and a doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Barcelona. He is professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Barcelona and founding director of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), since October 2005. In September 2012 he was appointed president-elect of the International Union of Biochemisty and Molecular Biology. Dr. Guinovart is Numerary Academic of the Royal National Academy of Pharmacy (Institute of Spain), member of the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC), and of Academia Europaea. His recognitions also include the “Narcís Monturiol” medal from the Catalan Government, the Prat de la Riba prize from the IEC, and the Diploma Honour from FEBS. In 2014 he received the Sant Jordi's Cross. Dr. Guinovart's research focuses on the metabolism of glycogen, which is closely related to diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases such as Lafora's Disease.
