Jo Labanyi

Jo Labanyi is a professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University, and a specialist in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Spanish literature, cinema and visual culture, in particular during the Franco dictatorship. She has also worked in gender studies, popular culture, and memory in relation with the Spanish Civil War. Notable among her many publications are Constructing Identity in Contemporary Spain: Theoretical Debates and Cultural Practice (Oxford University Press, 2002), Gender and Modernization in the Spanish Realist Novel (Oxford University Press, 2000 – published in Spanish as Género y modernización en la novela realista espanyola, Cátedra, 2011) and is joint author of the book Engaging the Emotions in Spanish Culture and History (Vanderbilt University Press, 2016).
