Senior lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in the politics of the Middle East. His latest book The Age of Counterrevolution: States and Revolutions in the Middle East (Cambridge University Press, 2022) argues that rather than seeking causes for the failure of the Arab revolutions of 2011, we should seek to explain the success of the counterrevolutions against them. His previous book The Struggle for the State in Jordan was co-winner of the 2017 Jadaliyya Political Economy Book prize. He is a member of the Salvage editorial collective and is currently working on a book about energy transition and the history of political sovereignty.
