Jairo Videa

Journalist and publisher

Jairo Videa was born in Nicaragua, and studied Communication at the National Autonomous University. Aged just twenty-one, he co-founded Coyuntura, an independent online daily which, specialising in investigative journalism, is committed to the struggle against human rights abuse in Central America. Since its foundation, his work as co-editor, focused on investigating and making visible the violence and crimes against humanity committed by the Nicaraguan government of Daniel Ortega, has led to threats and persecution, to such an extent that he had to go into exile in 2018, first in Honduras, where he was taken in by the UNHCR Foundation, and now in Barcelona where he participates in the Hosted Writer programme of the Catalan PEN Centre. Between these two periods of exile, Videa returned for a short visit to Nicaragua where he continued his professional involvement as a participant, inter alia, in the Regional Programme, and also in the Online Journalism and Combatting Fake News Programme of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
