Helga Nowotny

Professor emerita of Science and Technology Studies, ETH Zurich and former President of the European Research Council (ERC)

Helga Nowotny is a PhD in Sociology from Columbia University and professor emerita of Science and Technology Studies at ETH Zurich. She was one of the founders of the European Research Council (ERC) where she held the presidency between 2010 and 2013. She has focused her studies on digitalization processes and their social impact. In 2011, the British daily newspaper Financial Times named her the most influential women in the field of science.

Throughout her career, she had various positions and functions in research and scientific advisory in Austria. Currently, she is part of the Swedish Academy of Sciences and in 2017 she received the President's Medal of the British Academy. She has published several books on innovation, science, technology and culture. The most recent are An Orderly Mess (Central European University Press, 2017) and In AI We Trust: Power, Illusion and Control of Predictive Algorithms (Wiley John + Sons, 2021) published in Spanish by Galaxia Gutenberg (La fe en la inteligencia artificial: Los algoritmos predictivos y el futuro de la humanidad, 2022).
