Lecturer in Sociology in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Florence, he is director of the Centre of Multidisciplinary Urban Research at the CITYLAB of the University of Florence. He is president of the Italian Sociology Association (AIS). Among his publications are Il progettista riflessivo. Le scienze sociali e la progettazione architettonica (Laterza, 2009) and La Ciudad Postmoderna (The Postmodern City – Celeste Ediciones, 2000).
