Francesc Badia i Dalmases
Francesc Badia i Dalmases is a political analyst, film producer, editor, author and journalist. He is the founder, director and lead editor of democraciaAbierta, the section for Latin America at openDemocracy London, and a multiple Pulitzer grantee. Francesc was awarded a Gabo Price in 2021 for his work on the Amazon rainforest. He is a frequent media commentator on democracy and world politics, contributor to The Guardian and El País, and a regular guest speaker at international debates and think tank seminars worldwide. He has worked with the Institute for Integrated Transitions and the Barcelona Institute of International Studies (IBEI), has been a senior researcher and general manager of the Barcelona Center for International Affairs (CIDOB) and a general manager of the European Institute of the Mediterranean. He has worked for the European Commission and for the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He worked for 15 years in the private sector as a consultant specializing in investment and foreign trade with emerging and transitional markets. With a degree from the University of Barcelona, and a high studies diploma from the Diplomatic School (Madrid), he also holds a master’s degree from the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute. He is fluent in Spanish, English, French, Catalan and Italian, and speaks some Portuguese.
Francesc was born in Mexico and has spent most of his professional life working from Barcelona. He is the author of several books like Order and Disorder in the 21st Century: Global Governance in a World of Anxieties (Icària, Barcelona, 2016), and Disruption: Backlash and Resistances in Latin American Democracies (openDemocracy, London, 2024).
