Caterina Biscari
Director of the ALBA Synchrotron
An experimental physicist who is known for her contributions to design, construction, and operation of particle accelerators, Caterina Biscari has been director of the southwestern Europe’s first synchrotron light laboratory, ALBA Synchrotron (Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona), since 2012. With a degree in Physics from the Complutense University, Madrid, and a PhD from the University of Naples Federico II, she has worked as a scientist in several laboratories around the world, in particular in Italy and at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva. Before joining ALBA Synchrotron, she was head of technology and scientific deputy-director of the Accelerators Division at the National Laboratory of Frascati in the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics. She also contributed to the National Centre for Oncological Hadrontherapy in Pavia, and is a member of the advisory committees of several projects, including the European Spallation Source (ESS) and the European XFEL proton source project. In 2009, she was appointed as a member of the European Physical Society for her distinguished service to the international physics community, and was awarded the Order of the Star of Italy in 2013.
