Journalist, essayist and the author of 21 books in which she comments incisively and provocatively on the social reality of the United States. A social activist and defender of causes, including public health, peace, women’s rights and economic justice, she is a regular contributor to publications including the New York Times, Harpers, The Progressive and Time magazine. She has taken part in a number of television programmes. Her best-known books include Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America (Metropolitan Books, 2001), Dancing in the Streets: A History of Collective Joy (Metropolitan Books, 2007) and her most recent book Bright-Sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America (Picador, 2010).
