Anton Zeilinger

Anton Zeilinger is a theoretical and experimental physicist. He studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Vienna and received a PhD in 1971 with a thesis on neutron physics. He has worked at the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT), the University of Innsbruck, and the Collège de France in Paris. He is presently scientific director at The Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) and Dean of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna.

His team was the first to verify quantum interference of macromolecules. He is one of the “fathers” in pioneering studies on teleportation. Since the 1990s he has been engaged in research on interlocked light particles and their use in transmitting quantum information (teleportation). He has made major contributions in the field of quantum physics, one of the most important among them being the teleportation of two photons from one end of the River Danube to the other by means of stations named Alice and Bob (as is the tradition in all teleportation experiments hitherto). He received the first Isaac Newton Medal of the Institute of Physics in 2007 and the Wolf Prize for Physics in 2010.
