Alba Sotorra
Independent filmmaker and producer
Alba Sotorra Clua is an independent filmmaker and producer, founder of the production company that bears her name, based in Barcelona. She has worked in Syria, Afghanistan, Korea, Bosnia, Cuba, the United States, Guatemala, England, Iran, Pakistan, Puerto Rico and Qatar, and has lived for long periods in the Middle East. Her films―all created from a conscious gender perspective and enmeshed with the current social and political reality―have been screened at international festivals such as SXSW, Hot Docs, SIFF, Karlovy Vary and Seminci, among others. Her prominent projects include directing the feature-length documentary El retorn. La vida després de l’ISIS [The Return. Life after ISIS] (2021), which premiered worldwide at the SXSW Film Festival and was selected by Hot Docs, Sheffield Doc/Fest, DocsBarcelona and HRWFF, among others. Comandant Arian [Commander Arian] (2018) was nominated for the Gaudí Awards for Best Documentary and selected for a long list of international festivals, and Game Over (2015) won the Gaudí Award for Best Documentary.
