Cartography of tuberculosis
“Postdata” is a research and creation project promoted by the Experimental Tuberculosis Unit of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Hospital, La Sullivan and the CCCB to create a map of the collective and cultural memory of tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis is a contagious disease associated like few others with major socio-economic inequalities that continues to be rooted in the most vulnerable communities. Apart from being part of everyday life for many people who have migrated from countries with high incidences of the disease, tuberculosis forms part of our collective memory, in the form of family history, historical knowledge or an idea borrowed from literature or cinema.
“Postdata” sets out to weave together these intertwining memories and experiences, taking as its epicentre the old Tuberculosis Sanatorium in the Raval district. In this way, writer, journalist and Doctor of Anthropology Nuria Alabao brings together personal stories, conversations and correspondence with researchers, creators, doctors, patients, nurses and local residents of one of the districts of Barcelona with the highest incidence of the illness.
The project is the product of collaboration between the Experimental Tuberculosis Unit of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Hospital, La Sullivan and the CCCB, and has the backing of many other associations, such as the European SMA-TB consortium, the UITB Foundation and the CIBER Enfermedades Respiratorias consortium.
