Let’s illustrate the story of Carmela and Jamil!
For summer day camps
In this fun and creative activity we learn the language of comics. The proposal is to put pencil to paper as we draw the story of Carmela and Jamil, two characters who cross paths at the Sant Andreu Market.
Using a giant grid of blank squares on the wall, together we will create the story of Carmela and Jamil in the style of Chris Ware, one of the most innovative creators in modern comics, as seen in Building Stories, which is amongst his most iconic works.
This is how the story begins: Carmela is 75 years old and lives on Ignasi Iglésias Street in Sant Andreu neighbourhood. Each Tuesday morning, she goes to the market to buy fresh fish. Jamil is 24 years old and lives in La Guineueta. Every morning, he takes his bicycle to work in a fish stall at Sant Andreu Market. What sort of things could happen to them? What are their memories and their dreams?
This proposal was created by the La Gossa comics school (Alfredo Borés and Berta Embún), with contributions from illustrators Cristina Daura, Nadia Hafid, Sergi Puyol and Marc Torices, as based on the exhibition “Chris Ware: Drawing is Thinking”.
